I am a medical student and am also interested in your question. I found this article from the Cato institute which you might find relevant. The authors discuss patents and their affect on innovation in a variety of fields, including medicine.

Regarding \"healthcare\" one of the best things the author and others like him could do is change the description of the product/service to better reflect what is really being expected and possible.
Dr. Jane Orient and others have pointed out that this is not health insurance but sickness insurance if properly considered. What has become expected by the public through reckless promises by the political class among others is \"prepaid wellness assurance\". It cannot be delivered at any price.
The fact that the public demands more services is in part a natural result of our higher standard of living. As the price of necessities has fallen there is more available for other elective things. Most health expenditures today are in fact elective. Sixty years ago if one had bad arthritis in his knees he took asparin, walked with a cane , and limited activity if possible. Today one expects joint replacement, but it is really elective. One can debate the value to society at large to restore function to the individual in question, but it is still an elective option afforded by our higher standard of living. The issue is who pays and how?
One other point that disappoints me. As a physician I don\'t dispute the role government policy has in elevating cost and price mentioned in the end of the discussion. Patents protect intellectual property rights as I view them, and FEE has always defended property rights. Other issues of restricting competition are not the same , but I\'m open to an explanation.

OK, I would like to clarify that I am not a conspiracy theorist. When I say that the politicians are getting exactly what they want out of the current financial crisis, I mean that at this moment in time, they see an opportunity to grab a little more power. I think that some of the more far sighted ones probably could see that this opportunity would present itself if they did nothing to fix the underlying problems. Obviously Rahm Emanuel is one who sees the opportunity of crisis. It’s not much of a stretch to think that such politicians can also see the obvious crises looming in Social Security and Medicare and also see a similar opportunity to grab power if they don’t reform them. I don\'t think that there are very many who are actually far sighted enough to see the end game of the path that they are on. The gradual expansion of government happens, I think, because of a lot of short sighted exploitations of crises to incrementally grab more power for government. Eventually, government will become so huge that it is totally unsustainable. This is the fulfillment of Fabianism. But the irony of Fabianism is that you don\'t need a conspiracy to create the resulting socialism that Fabianism desires. You don’t even need Fabians. Without diligence, society will naturally result in socialism. So really, these politicians are fulfilling the requirements of Fabianism whether or not they know it, whether or not they are conspiring, whether or not they really are Fabians. No conspiracy required. The Fabians believe that the resulting socialism will be a utopia. But that belief is a total fantasy. Anyone who honestly looks at the end game of socialism, using history as a guide, knows that the end game of socialism is a devaluation of individual life to the point that individuals are completely expendable whereas in capitalism, the individual is the MOST valuable asset of society. (We can see this at work in the customer service of social programs verses private businesses. Who values the individual more?). War is the end game of socialism, either civil war from the citizens oppressed by their government, or war as a result of a weakened society that is easy for others attack. I don’t think that this is the hope of the current politicians. They are not conspiring to create this. But it is nevertheless the end result of the path of ever increasing government.

It all becomes clear when we accept the obvious fact that there was never a sincere desire to \"fix\" the causes of the current crisis in the first place. Everyone could see this coming. Every attempt to reform fed policy and Fanny and Freddy were meet with total denial of an obvious problem. There are two explanations for this; either Barny Frank and fellow democrats really are that stupid, or, they knew exactly what they were doing all along. Personally, I think it\'s dangerous to assume that people are stupid. Why on earth would you reform a situation that has worked out so perfectly? They are getting exactly what they wanted out of it...more power. Furthermore, it is painfully clear to most people that Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are both on the path to insolvency. These failures will produce even more profound crises for the country than is currently being experienced, yet there has been no real attempt to reform them. Yet again, the failure of these programs is MUCH more politically desirable than their reform, since it will provide yet another huge justification for government power grabs of epic proportion. The discussion about the reform of these institutions is therefore also completely insincere. Why should they reform them when they can get so much from their inevitable demise? That would just be stupid.
