Are We Rome?

Monumental sums for bailouts. Staggering increases in public debt. Concentration of power in the central government. These are only some of the economic issues the United States is facing. Lawrence W. Reed, president emeritus of FEE, discusses 21st Century America and how familiar it is to the ill-fated Roman welfare state of two millennia ago.

  • Lawrence W. (“Larry”) Reed is FEE's President Emeritus, Humphreys Family Senior Fellow, and Ron Manners Global Ambassador for Liberty. He previously served as president of FEE from 2008-2019. He chaired FEE’s board of trustees in the 1990s and has been both writing and speaking for FEE since the late 1970s.
