High School Seminar FAQs

I've already been to a high school seminar.  Can I still apply?
While you can still apply, we give preference to students who have never before attended a summer seminar.  You can still be involved with FEE, though!  Refer your friends to our seminars, and you could win a reward!

If I am graduating from high school this year, which seminar do I apply to?
If you will be 18 years old at the beginning of a seminar, you can attend either a high school or a college seminar. If you will be 14-17 years old at the beginning of a seminar, you can attend any of our high school seminars.

What is the cost of a seminar?
All accepted participants recieve a full scholarship for tuition, room, and meals.  All you have to do is get to the seminar, and we will take care of you once you are there (a limited number of travel scholarships are available).  We'll even have some free books and other materials to give away!

I applied for a seminar; when will I hear if I am accepted?
Students are accepted on a rolling basis; however, we receive many applications, so it may take a few weeks for us to get back to you. You will hear back by the middle of April at the latest.

I got my acceptance letter!  What do I do now?
Congratulations!  There is a link to a form in the letter that you need to fill out to confirm your acceptance.  Make sure you have your parent/guardian and a credit or debit card when you open the form, then follow these steps.
  1. Check the box to confirm your acceptance and intended attendance.
  2. Sign the medical release
  3. Check the box for the Attrition Policy
  4. Fill in the credit card information
  5. Check the box for the Photo Consent and Release
  6. Review your information on the next page
  7. Submit!

Make sure you go all the way through the form and hit Submit on the 4th page!  You attendance isn't confirmed until you do so.

Do I have to stay in the dorms, or can I go home each night?
All students are required to stay in the dorms with fellow participants.  We want all students to have the full experience of a FEE seminar which includes staying in the dorms.  It'll be fun, and you'll get to have a college experience while you're there!

What is the format of a lecture?
A typical lecture will be interactive and will last 40-45 minutes. There will be time at the end for questions.

Will I receive classroom credit from my participation at the seminar?
You will receive a certficate of completion at the end of the seminar stating that you participated in 17.5 hours of lecture. It is up to you to contact your school to inquire about the seminar counting for classroom credit.

What should I pack?
The dress code for the seminar is business casual. Be sure to bring all toiletries and personal items you would need for any overnight trip. To see if you need to bring linens, please refer to your seminar location on the travel page. We also recommend that you bring a notebook to take notes during the lectures and that you leave some space in your bags for the books you will take home.

If your programs are free, why does the seminar confirmation ask for a credit card?
The credit card is required as part of our Attrition Policy, so you will only be charged if you cancel your attendance too close to the deadline.

In order to provide the best possible programming at no charge to our students and to respect our generous donors who fund these programs in their entirety, it is imperative that we have an accurate attendance count for each event we host. Attrition means that FEE incurs additional costs for each student in attendance, in addition to preventing students on our waiting list from attending.

To accommodate all our students and continue to provide seminars at no charge, we require that our students sign our Attrition Policy form, acknowledging that they will follow the deadlines below for opting out of a seminar.

Cancellation more than 60 days prior to a seminar – No charge
Cancellation 60 days prior a seminar - $50
Cancellation 30 days prior to a seminar - $100
Cancellation 48 hours before a seminar (including no shows at the seminar) - $200
$200 is the total cost of what it costs to host a student for one day. If you cancel within 48 hours of a seminar, you will be responsible for reimbursing FEE for the charges accrued.
